Student Financial Success

Cost of Attendance

Tuition is not the only cost that students need to calculate for college. In order to gain a full understanding of the costs involved, students should calculate:

Tuition

The cost of tuition will vary, depending on the program in which a student enrolls. The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences offers two programs of study: the Professional and Liberal Studies (PALS) Program and the Career Development Program. The PALS Program consists of on-campus day students, while the Career Development Program consists of evening and online students. The college also offers a graduate program in writing.

PALS students can take advantage of a flat-rate cost by enrolling in 12-18 credits per semester. If a PALS student registers for less than 12 or more than 18 credits, charges are assessed on a per-credit basis.

The Career Development and graduate programs are charged on a per-credit basis only.

Room and Board

Students living on-campus need to calculate the university's room and board costs. Students living off-campus also need to budget for housing and food.

On-campus housing:

Room rate varies according to occupancy and residence hall.

Meal plan per semester (declining balance): $1,200
Please refer to the Residential Life page for details.

Off-campus expenses to consider:

  • Rent
  • Utilities
  • Food
  • Cable
  • Internet
  • Phone
Books and Supplies
Books and supplies are another expense to consider. Estimate approximately $75-100 per course. This may be high for some courses and low for others, but is a good average estimate.
Transportation
For a student in on-campus housing, the cost of transportation is minimal. However, students who commute to campus need to consider car payments, auto insurance, gas, repairs, etc. A student who uses public transportation must consider bus fare or other such expenses.
Miscellaneous Personal Costs
Expenses will arise beyond direct college costs of tuition, fees, room and board, books, etc. These incidental costs can build up quickly. It may help to sit down with family members to anticipate such costs as housewares, toiletries, clothes, entertainment, medical costs, etc. It is better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.
