Deciding Major

Many students do not decided on a program of study or a career path to follow until after they enter college. Some change their minds more than once during their undergraduate years.

If you're undecided about a major field of study, NSU's faculty and staff can help you through the process of choosing a career path and selecting an appropriate program.

Use your first two years to explore options. Investigate potential majors with professors in various departments. Select courses that fulfill general education requirements and expose you to majors that interest you. This is a time to try new things and focus on courses that seem the most interesting.

Outside of your classes you can also become clearer about your strengths, interests, and skills through active participation in campus and community activities. Get involved!

While you are deciding on a major, take advantage of programs that stimulate creative and intellectual discovery or that give you insight into the best career path for you. The college offers many programs that will open doors and help you learn about different disciplines and career options.

As you start your academic career in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, plan to meet with your academic advisor each semester to discuss ideas and strategies for exploring.

After the first year, start working with your advisor to narrow down your choices and set a time line for making a decision. Bear in mind that although your major will direct your studies, the college's strong liberal arts education will help prepare you for a number of career options.

The college offers many resources to help you. Talk to other students and professors as well as professionals in the community who work in your areas of interest. You should also visit the Office of Academic Services, where you can take advantage of many testing and tutoring services available.

As you proceed through the decision-making process, ask yourself specific questions: What are my interests? What are my career goals? What degrees are required beyond the undergraduate degree in order to succeed in the careers that interest me?

You should plan to make your decision by the time you reach 60 credits, generally by the end of your sophomore year. When you're ready to declare a major, fill out "Change of Major/Minor" or "Change of School" forms available at the Office of Academic Advising.

Choosing a major is an exciting part of the college experience. Remember that your academic advisors are always here to help guide you throughout the proces
