Message from the Dean
Don Rosenblum

Do you consider yourself successful?

What constitutes "success" is probably different to each of us. For some, individual academic honors and achievement are critical markers of success. For others, balancing multiple demands of school, work, and family constitute success.

This summer, I read Thomas Friedman’s latest book Hot, Flat, and Crowded. In this text, Friedman calls for greater critical attention to "green" economies that are sustained by meeting global energy needs. For Friedman, the definition and pursuit of ‘success’ is a much broader—and long-term—challenge: a challenge that is also relevant to each of us, and makes more significant our personal daily and academic goals.

As you prepare for the start of fall classes, keep focused on your goals and plans for personal and professional success. I challenge you to also consider broad global goals for success and how your work will make a difference. You might be surprised how inspiring—and motivating—this can be.

Let your faculty and staff know how we can help you succeed and make a difference in the world.

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors this year.

Sincerely,

Don Rosenblum, Ph.D.
Dean, Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences

Sing with the Bossa Nova Chorale!

Do you love to sing? Would you like to sing and meet new people at the same time?
Well, the Bossa Nova Chorale is looking for a few good voices!

The Bossa Nova chorale is the premier vocal ensemble of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Division of Performing and Visual Arts. It is composed of talented, aspiring vocalists who sing a wide repertoire of songs, from spirituals and vocal jazz charts to choral music spanning the last millennium. Opportunities to shine as a soloist are also available.

Students involved in the Bossa Nova Chorale can also earn 1 credit (pass or fail) by signing up for MUSC 3300, section DA1—Ensemble. Chorale performances are scheduled throughout the academic year.

Rehearsals for the Bossa Nova Chorale will be held each Tuesday during the fall 2009 semester, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Don Taft University Center, room 310 (part of the college’s Performing and Visual Arts Wing).

For more information and/or to become a member of the Bossa Nova Chorale, contact the ensemble's director, Jennifer Donelson, D.M.A., at (954) 262-7610. The deadline to sign up for the fall 2009 semester is Tuesday, September 1, 2009.
