Message from The Dean
Welcome
back to NSU and to the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. I hope you had a productive semester break and that
you are well-rested, rejuvenated, and ready for a successful winter 2009 semester.
In my message last month, I provided advice about financial aid and scholarship opportunities available to help
you achieve your degree, particularly during challenging financial times.
As the economy continues on its uncertain path, our state leaders, including governor Charlie Crist, are considering
options to address budget shortfalls including cuts to the Florida Residents Access Grants (FRAG) program, which provides
tuition assistance to full-time Florida students attending private, in-state colleges. The proposed cut would reduce
FRAG funding by as much as $48.5 million, or 50 percent, and would impact more than 2,750 undergraduate students at
NSU.
I urge everyone to generate letters and calls to the governor and state leaders to oppose these FRAG reductions.
The governor is expected to release the proposed budget in February. He needs to hear from us now, before it is too
late. You can view the college's FRAG announcement
here for more information about saving FRAG, including message points, sample letters, and details about contacting
the governor.
I'd also like to take this time to encourage you to review your financial aid plans and
to explore additional financial-aid options beyond traditional scholarship and grant programs. Work closely with your
academic advisor to insure that all costs can be covered in order to complete your academic goals. Thinking creatively
in your search for financial resources can open new doors.
Again, I'd like to welcome you back, and I wish you a successful winter 2009 semester here at NSU.
Sincerely
Don Rosenblum, Ph.D.
Dean, Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences
